AVIF to WebP converter: free, private, in your browser

Convert AVIF images to WebP for apps and sites that don’t accept AVIF yet. It runs right in your browser, and your images stay on your device.

AVIF to WebP

Convert AVIF images to WebP when you need a format that more tools and older apps accept. AVIF input needs a browser that can open AVIF, which all current major browsers can.

How do I use the AVIF to WebP converter?

  1. Choose a mode. Pick Lossless (default), Near-lossless, or High quality with a quality between 40 and 100. Optionally set a maximum size.
  2. Add your images. Drag JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP or AVIF files (or whole folders) onto the page, paste an image, or click anywhere to pick files.
  3. Let it convert. Each file is security-checked, color-optimized when that causes no visible loss, and encoded to WebP by libwebp at its most thorough setting (method 6), one file at a time.
  4. Download. Download each WebP on its own, drag it to your desktop (Chrome and Edge), or download everything as one ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers does it work in?

smallwebp.io works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile, because it needs WebAssembly and Web Workers. Dragging a finished file straight to the desktop works in Chrome and Edge.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. smallwebp.io runs entirely in your browser. The libwebp encoder and the libimagequant color optimizer run as WebAssembly in a Web Worker on your device, and the site’s security policy blocks connections to other servers. Your images never leave your computer.

Is smallwebp.io free?

Yes. smallwebp.io is free to use, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. Each file can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels.
