smallwebp.io: convert JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP and AVIF to WebP in your browser
smallwebp.io is a free, browser-based tool that converts JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP and AVIF images to WebP. It runs Google’s libwebp encoder as WebAssembly inside the browser tab, so images are never uploaded to a server. It is lossless by default, converts animated GIFs to animated WebP, and handles whole batches and folders.
How do I convert an image to WebP?
- Choose a mode. Pick Lossless (default), Near-lossless, or High quality with a quality between 40 and 100. Optionally set a maximum size.
- Add your images. Drag JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP or AVIF files (or whole folders) onto the page, paste an image, or click anywhere to pick files.
- Let it convert. Each file is security-checked, color-optimized when that causes no visible loss, and encoded to WebP by libwebp at its most thorough setting (method 6), one file at a time.
- Download. Download each WebP on its own, drag it to your desktop (Chrome and Edge), or download everything as one ZIP.
Free online WebP converter: every conversion
JPG to WebP (JPEG to WebP)
Convert JPG and JPEG photos to WebP for free. For photos, High quality (lossy WebP) or Near-lossless usually makes the file much smaller than the original JPG; Lossless keeps every pixel exact but can make a JPG bigger, and the result is shown in red when that happens.
PNG to WebP
Convert PNG to WebP without losing quality. Lossless WebP keeps every pixel, including transparency, and is usually much smaller than the PNG, especially for screenshots, logos, icons and illustrations.
GIF to WebP (animated GIF to animated WebP)
Convert animated GIFs to animated WebP. Every frame keeps its timing and the loop count, and only the changed part of each frame is stored, so animated WebPs are typically far smaller than the GIF. Still GIFs become regular WebP images.
BMP to WebP
Convert uncompressed BMP bitmaps to WebP. Lossless WebP keeps the exact pixels at a fraction of the BMP file size.
AVIF to WebP
Convert AVIF images to WebP when you need a format that more tools and older apps accept. AVIF input needs a browser that can open AVIF, which all current major browsers can.
Compress WebP (WebP to smaller WebP)
Re-encode existing WebP files to make them smaller, for example with High quality at a lower quality setting or with a maximum size.
Bulk convert images to WebP
Convert many images, or a whole folder, to WebP at once, then download them all as one ZIP that keeps the folder structure. There is no limit on the number of files.
Resize and compress images for the web
Shrink images for websites, blogs and online stores: set a maximum longest side (for example 1920 px for Full HD) and pick a mode to reduce file size, which helps pages load faster and improves Core Web Vitals.
What can smallwebp.io do?
- Lossless by default: the WebP decodes to exactly the same pixels as the original.
- Three modes: Lossless, Near-lossless, and lossy High quality with a quality slider from 40 to 100.
- Color optimization with libimagequant (the engine behind pngquant) reduces images to up to 256 colors first, skipped automatically when it would cause visible loss.
- Animated GIF to animated WebP, keeping every frame’s timing and the loop count.
- Batch conversion of many files or whole folders, with one ZIP download that keeps folder paths.
- Optional resize to a maximum longest side; smaller images stay their original size.
- Side-by-side before/after comparison with a live quality tuner.
- Every file is checked byte by byte before it is opened: real file type, size limits, hidden scripts, and appended files.
- Metadata such as EXIF, GPS location and XMP is not copied into the WebP.
- Honest sizes: if a WebP comes out bigger than the original, it is shown in red instead of hidden.
- No uploads, no account, and nothing about your images is stored.
Which image formats are supported?
smallwebp.io accepts JPG / JPEG, PNG, GIF (including animated), BMP, AVIF, WebP, and always outputs WebP. Each file can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels, with sides up to 16,383 pixels (the WebP format’s limit).
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert JPG to WebP for free?
Open smallwebp.io, choose High quality (or Near-lossless) for photos, and drop your JPG or JPEG files on the page. Each one is converted to WebP in your browser and can be downloaded on its own or all together as a ZIP. It is free, with no account and no watermark.
How do I convert PNG to WebP without losing quality?
Use the default Lossless mode. smallwebp.io encodes the PNG as lossless WebP, which decodes to exactly the same pixels, keeps transparency, and is usually much smaller than the PNG.
Can I convert multiple images to WebP at once?
Yes. Drop many files or a whole folder at once. They are converted one after another, and the finished WebPs can be downloaded together as one ZIP that keeps the folder paths.
Does converting to WebP keep transparency?
Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas in PNG, GIF and AVIF images stay transparent in the WebP.
Does it work on iPhone, Android and Mac?
Yes. smallwebp.io runs in the browser, so it works on iPhone and iPad (Safari), Android (Chrome), Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebooks with no app to install.
Is smallwebp.io free?
Yes. smallwebp.io is free to use, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. Each file can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. smallwebp.io runs entirely in your browser. The libwebp encoder and the libimagequant color optimizer run as WebAssembly in a Web Worker on your device, and the site’s security policy blocks connections to other servers. Your images never leave your computer.
What is lossless WebP?
Lossless WebP is a separate WebP codec (VP8L) that compresses an image without changing a single pixel. Decoding a lossless WebP gives back exactly the original pixels. It is usually much smaller than PNG for screenshots, graphics and illustrations.
What is the difference between Lossless, Near-lossless and High quality?
Lossless keeps every pixel exact. Near-lossless uses the same lossless engine but nudges pixel values very slightly so they compress better; the change is not visible, and files are often much smaller. High quality is lossy WebP (VP8) at the quality you choose between 40 and 100, which gives the smallest files and suits photos.
Why is my WebP bigger than the original JPG?
A JPG is already lossy. Saving it as lossless WebP stores every pixel, including the JPG’s compression noise, exactly, which can take more space. For JPG photos, choose Near-lossless or High quality instead. smallwebp.io always shows the real result, in red when a file grew.
Can it convert animated GIFs to WebP?
Yes. Animated GIFs become animated WebP files. Every frame keeps its exact timing and the GIF’s loop count. Only the changed area of each frame is encoded, which keeps animated WebPs small. Animated files keep their original size even when resizing is turned on.
Does it remove EXIF and GPS metadata?
Yes. The converter decodes the pixels and encodes a new WebP, so EXIF data (including GPS location), XMP and comments are not copied over. Embedded ICC color profiles are not carried over either.
Is it safe to drop unknown files?
Every file is checked before it is opened: the real file type is read from its first bytes instead of trusting the extension, sizes and dimensions are checked against safety limits, and files containing hidden scripts or other appended files are blocked. Only one file is processed at a time.
Which browsers does it work in?
smallwebp.io works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile, because it needs WebAssembly and Web Workers. Dragging a finished file straight to the desktop works in Chrome and Edge.
Why convert images to WebP?
WebP files are typically much smaller than PNG and JPG at the same visual quality, so web pages load faster and use less bandwidth. WebP supports transparency and animation, and every major browser displays it.
